Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will be holding its annual orientation meetings for home applications in May 2009 at the Community Partnership Building at 817 S Freedom in Provo. Community members who are interested in applying for the Habitat program will need to come to one of the following meetings for applications and more information: Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m.; Friday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m.; Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. For qualification or more information, look online at www.habitatuc.org or call the office at (801) 344-8527.

LOCAL WOMEN BUILDING HOUSES TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONWIDE MOTHER’S DAY INITIATIVE
In the days leading up to Mother’s Day, construction crews of women volunteers all across the country will be pounding nails and raising walls at Habitat construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 2 - 10. In Utah County on May 9, 2009, local women volunteers will be installing siding and putting up drywall at the Webb family’s new home at 600 North Orem Blvd. in Orem.

Recording artist Tricia Yearwood is helping launch Women Build Week, building with women volunteers in her adopted hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Yearwood will wrap up the final weekend of the event building with women volunteers in Atlanta, near her hometown of Monticello, Ga. Across all 50 states, more than 7,000 women volunteers are expected to build at more than 200 Habitat for Humanity construction sites.

Developed through the partnership between Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing. The event is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, underwritten by Lowe’s, which brings women from all walks of life together to learn construction skills and then use those skills to build simple, decent affordable

Lowe’s is providing Habitat for Humanity of Utah County a $5,000 grant, as well as in-store volunteer training, in support of this one-day build. Nationwide, Lowe’s committed $875,000 to National Women Build Week, providing grants and event support materials to 175 Habitat participating affiliates. National Women Build Week is the first major initiative of Lowe’s renewed five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat. That commitment includes underwriting Habitat’s Women Build program, as well as providing construction know-how at in-store clinics and build sites, and funding for a variety of Habitat projects across the country.

LOCAL BIKERS TO “HAMMER DOWN” FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The First Annual Bike to Build Motorcycle Ride for Affordable Housing will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 with proceeds benefitting Habitat for Humanity of Utah County. The escorted ride around Utah Lake will begin with registration and breakfast at 9:00 am at Monarch Honda Powerhouse, located at 398 West 800 North in Orem. A BBQ Lunch will follow at Bikers World USA in Orem. The cost is $20.00 per bike ($10.00 for an additional rider) and includes the ride, breakfast and lunch, t-shirt, pin, and door-prize entry. Buy tickets in advance at www.habitatuc.org or at Monarch Honda on the day of the event. The ride is being sponsored by Monarch Honda Powerhouse, Bikers World USA, and 97.5 the Blaze.


Habitat for Humanity of Utah County is a non-profit, ecumenical organization and is one of more than 2,300 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International. The local affiliate is committed to eliminating poverty housing and homelessness in the county by building or renovating simple, decent homes with area residents in need of affordable shelter. Affiliated in 1991 by a group of local community members that were concerned about substandard housing in the county, the organization has built or renovated 34 homes providing more than 55 adults and 116 children safe and affordable housing and a stable home environment.
