Eight new graduates from the “Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting’-By World” program were honored at a graduation ceremony this past week at the Scenicview Academy in North Provo. Graduates were all local Habitat for Humanity partner families.
The Getting Ahead program is a step-by-step life planning and education program, sponsored by Habitat and Community Action Services and Food Bank, which includes facilitated education, group support, and hands on experiences. Participants attend a weekly group session facilitated by a trained facilitator and follow a workbook with various modules. The group sessions last for 12 weeks. The overall goal of the program is to help area families work together to break the poverty cycle, find solutions to community issues, and build bridges to a more stable and productive life. To date, 88 community members have graduated from the program that was started locally in 2008. The next group will begin in the fall of 2012. Special thanks to Habitat homeowner, Tauni Hardman, for facilitating the local program.
