In recognition of World Habitat Day 2012, Habitat for Humanity of Utah County held a cake cutting celebration at its ReStore in Orem to bring awareness for the need for decent housing locally and worldwide on October 1, 2012.
Additionally, the local Habitat ReStore joined other Habitat for Humanity ReStores around the country to celebrate World Habitat Day by raising awareness of the need for affordable housing and soliciting cash donations to support Habitat's mission. ReStore customers have been asked over the last month to help by purchasing a paper house. Store staff has been displaying these paper houses with the donor's name on its World Habitat Tree inside the store.
The United Nations established World Habitat Day in 1985 to spotlight the need for adequate shelter worldwide. On the first Monday in October each year, Habitat for Humanity affiliates and national organizations raise their collective voice, taking action to change the systems, policies and attitudes that lead to poverty housing, and engaging partners in solutions.
