Eight future Habitat for Humanity of Utah County homeowners and three Food and Care Coalition transitional program participants graduated from the Getting Ahead program on Wednesday at a graduation ceremony at Habitat's Orem office. Graduates received a certificate and enjoyed some refreshments with their families and friends as part of the celebration.
The Getting Ahead program is a systematic life planning and education program that includes facilitated education, group support, and hands on experiences. Participants attend a weekly group session facilitated by a facilitator and follow a workbook with various modules. The group sessions last for 16 weeks. The overall goal of the program is to help area families work together to break the poverty cycle, find solutions to community issues, and build bridges to a more stable and productive life. Habitat started the program locally in 2008, graduating over 110 area residents from the program. Special thanks to Dave Harlow for facilitating the class.
