To help kick off National Women Build Week locally, several volunteers and Habitat supporters joined well-known female general contractor, Sallie Bradshaw, her 86 year old mother, Shirley, and members of her family on Saturday to frame the floor on a five-bedroom Habitat home currently being built in partnership with Armando and Roberta Sandoval and their five children in Lehi, Utah.
In addition to framing, local volunteers enjoyed a Cinco de Mayo themed meal, sponsored by Costa Vida Lehi, and were entertained by Mariachi Los Pumas of BYU during lunch time. It was a fun and productive day.
National Women Build Week, a nationwide initiative created by Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s in 2008. is held the week leading up to Mother’s Day with Lowe’s generously donating nearly $2 million dollars and volunteer support. Hosting the event during this week reinforces the message that every woman can make a difference through learning and using construction skills. The annual initiative has brought together more than 117,000 all-women construction volunteers to build or repair homes with nearly 5,000 families over the past 10 years.
