Let the SUN do the Work!

With cloudy skies and pouring rain, Habitat for Humanity of Utah County made affiliate history as they installed solar panels on two of the homes at its Washburn Reams Estate in Orem.

One World Solar and Progressive Power were on site to install the solar panels. Even Orem Mayor Richard Brunst took part of the action as he stood on the roof, watching the proceedings.

“We as a city are happy and appreciative of Habitat as they continue to improve our community.” Mayor Brunst said. “We love what they are doing.”

One World Solar and Progressive Power Solutions partnered with Habitat to help bring renewable clean energy to Habitat homeowners. They also generously agreed to donate a large part of the system and installation. Each solar panel system is valued at around $15,000 and is projected to generate three to four kilowatts per home, depending on the size of the home and family size. Both families receiving the solar panels are expected to save an average of $100 a month.

“Habitat serves the families that we strive to help and Habitat has been wanting to bring solar to their families for many years,” Dale Wilkerson, Founder and Executive Director of One World Solar, said. “Both organizations felt like this was a positive venture and would benefit not only the partner families but the community as a whole.”

The homes in the planned unit development feature green technologies designed to be more energy efficient. Starting with the exterior walls, Habitat has used environmentally friendly materials that are designed to lower utility costs for the homeowners. Low emissivity windows, an efficient furnace and as much natural light as possible will also make the homes more energy efficient. The solar panels will also help reduce utility costs and improve the energy efficiency of the house.

“This is a monumental occasion for Habitat for Humanity of Utah County,” Kena Mathews, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Utah County said. “These solar panels take our mission of providing affordable housing to the next level as they will cut the cost of electricity for our Habitat for Humanity families.”

Both One World Solar and Progressive Power are Utah companies. Progressive Power has more than ten years of solar engineering, design and installation experience. One World Solar is a non-profit organization that works with community partners, volunteers, and job trainees to install solar power and energy storage systems for low-income families.
